If you're like many homeowners out there, you're always on the lookout for clever little tweaks that can have a significant impact on your utility bills over time. Luckily, when it comes to your HVAC system, there are many small, simple things that you can do to maximize performance without having to call a professional. In this blog post, we share three easy steps you can take to save on heating costs.
Keep your thermostat below 68 degrees.
The Department of Energy suggests turning down your thermostat between seven to 10 degrees for at least eight hours a day. By so doing, you can enjoy up to 10 percent in savings on your energy bills. If you set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower while you sleep, you can significantly reduce the amount of work your heating system has to do, which will translate to cost savings for you.
Check your insulation.
The insulation around your house can be your best friend when it comes to energy efficiency. A well-insulated house will keep your heating system from working too hard so that you don't need to use as much electricity or fuel oil.
Let the sun do some of the work.
Last but not least, you should let the sun do some of the heavy lifting. By simply opening your blinds or curtains before you leave the house, the sun's rays can warm up your home for you. This is especially effective if you have south-facing windows.
