Have Air Leaks? Spray, Don’t Pay
Weather around here in Upstate NY covers both ends of the spectrum. We get the coldest of the cold in the winter and we get scorched when the summer months roll around. These extreme temperatures mean that keeping your home comfortable is a year-round effort. Obviously, your HVAC systems do the lions’ share of the work on that front, but the temperature-controlled air still
has a way of making it’s way outside your home, wasting your energy and money. Spray foam insulation solves this issue by sealing out drafts that would hinder your heating/cooling efforts. And because of it’s noise dampening qualities and ability to keep out moisture, many homeowners opt for spray foam insulation over more traditional products.
What is Spray Foam Insulation?
Two types of spray foam insulation exist: open-cell and closed-cell. Fred F. Collis & Sons installs closed cell, or high-density, spray foam insulation, which is extremely durable and is applied using low pressure spray equipment. This low pressure spray foam is safer for your family — and our technicians — because it produces fewer fumes. The thermal resistance, or R-value, of spray foam is about R-6 to R-8, which is much higher compared to fiberglass batts which are only about R-3 per inch.
Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation
- Effective moisture barrier — Spray foam blocks moisture infiltration, which reduces the potential for mold and mildew growth. This is one of the reasons we recommend spray foam for basement insulation.
- Air sealing — Spray foam is often used before applying blown-in cellulose insulation to close up holes and cracks and provide an effective air barrier.
- Noise reduction — The air bubbles in the foam act to reduce sound transmission for a quieter home.
- Stronger walls — When the spray foam hardens, it creates a dense coating that can help to reinforce the structures where it is applied.
